Advent collection supports Nepalese farmers
Fight poverty, bring food to Nepalese people's plates and donate
During Advent, we prepare for Christmas and can also direct our thoughts to our neighbours who live far away. Caritas' Advent collection is focused on Nepal. Farmers in Nepal need suitable agricultural equipment and training to be able to adapt to the challenges of climate change. The effects of climate change are devastating in Nepal. Last September, Nepal suffered devastating floods, in which thousands lost their crops and livestock. The destruction of crops increases food prices, which further exacerbates poverty. Farmers do not have modern agricultural equipment or training to help them adapt to the changes. Many depend on growing a single crop, mainly rice. The floods make farming difficult. If the rice harvest fails, the family loses its most important source of food and income for the entire year. When the situation seems hopeless, many move from the countryside to the city or abroad in search of work.
Caritas helps farmers to start raising other plants or animals. Farmers set up vegetable gardens. So far, 608 farmers have started raising chickens. This way they get a more diverse diet and money from selling the products. Caritas also teaches farmers how to make their own organic pesticides and fertilizers.
The development cooperation project of Caritas Finland is implemented in cooperation with Caritas Nepal and Caritas Austria. With the help of donations, these organizations are able to promote the project.
