The Caritas Finland Lenten collection supports women small-farmers
The Lenten collection has supported women's training in organic farming methods in Dindigul district, in Tamil Nadu, Southern India. 100 women from local self-help groups have participated in workshops to learn how to prepare organic fertilizers, pesticides and vermicompost.
Currently the local farmers are heavily dependent on industrial fertilizers and pesticides, that take up a lot of their family income as well as causing skin and respiratory problems and environmental damage. Organic farming increases women's self-reliance as the materials, such as cow dung and neem tree leaves, are locally available.
The women are hopeful about shifting to organic agriculture in the future. The methods are easily to follow and will help in saving money and earning more income through selling organic produce.
The mission of our partner organization SSSPT is to bring together women from different social classes and castes in order to advance women's rights, democratic participation and environmental wellbeing in the rural areas.
