Caritas Finland supports its partner Fundacion Iwoka in preventing school dropout and marginalization of young people in Pereira, Colombia. Iwoka trains young people who in turn train the children of their own school, achieving a positive impact on their cognitive and human development. Through the training of trainers’ methodology, Iwoka manages to generate a multiplier effect; the high school students take charge of accompanying the primary kids of their own school, becoming a kind of godparents or older brothers.
The high school kids chosen for the program are carefully trained so that they can be true models of the children. Each high school kid is in charge of a group of 3 to 4 children whom he helps academically, as well as instilling habits of behaviour such as respect, order, obedience, friendship, among others.
The program directly benefits youngsters in 9th and 10th grade, between 15 and 17 years of age enrolled in a public educational institution. These kids usually come from dysfunctional families and are often victims of family violence. Some consume psycho-active substances, others belong to gangs, and all of them are at high risk of getting into the microtraffic networks.
Also, direct beneficiaries of the program are children between 7 and 9 years of age, who are 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade in the same school as the 9th and 10th graders and are also from coming from fragile families.
