Caritas Finland’s Advent Collection opens on the Eve of Advent, i.e. on November 26. This year’s Collection aids Syrian refugees: Caritas Finland supports pregnancy care for refugee women in Lebanon through a Caritas Lebanon project. Help us to help!

Christmas Market

As before, Caritas Finland takes part in the Helsinki Christmas Market in Senate Square. From Decebmer 3rd through December 22 you can come and do good by buying delicacies made in convents.

Victims of War: the Children of Syria

Children in Syria have experienced horrors that nobody - let alone children - should need to experience. Since the civil war began in 2011 three million people have fled Syria. More han half of them are children and nearly half a million - 425,000 - are under the age of five.

Caritas helps Syrian refugees in Lebanon

The three-year-long conflict in Syria places an enormous strain on the whole region. Caritas Lebanon works to support Syrian refugees in Lebanon, but the numbers in need of assistance are huge.

According to the UNHCR, the conflict affects more than 2.6 million Syrians in the region, including in Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Lebanon. The UNHCR estimates that Lebanon will have to deal with 1.5 million Syrian refugees, 100,000 Palestinian Refugees from Syria, 50,000 Lebanese returnees and 1.5 million affected Lebanese during 2014.

Caritas Lebanon is doing its share to help. Here are some of the things the organisation has done recently:

March: Caritas Lebanon primary health care centers participated in the third national Polio immunization campaign which reached 600,000 children under 5.

February and March: thousands of Syrian refugees received primary healthcare services through Caritas Lebanon.

Caritas Lebanon also distributed more than 2,000 food kits, more than 15,000 hygiene kits, 8,254 baby kits and more than 10,000 winter blankets.

The formation of a new government in Lebanon ended a 10-month political stalemate which coupled with the spillover of violence from Syria, had worsened internal stability. However, the increasing impact of the Syrian conflict on Lebanon means that the security situation is likely to remain volatile at least on the short term.
