Support Low-Income Families by helping children to go Summer camps

Domestic social work supports low-income families with children's summer camp fees and gift cards distributed before Christmas. Make a donation to support local families - the form can be found further down on this page.

Caritas helps people living in Finland

Camp support provides children and young people with a camp experience. With your support, campers can enjoy a change in their holiday routine. Many low-income families living in Finland struggle to offer meaningful activities for their children during the summer. They are unsure how to manage holiday expenses. Camp support gives these families financial relief. As summer approaches, the need for support is at its highest.

“Camp support is important to give children and young people a break from their home environment. For many children, a week at camp is the only event of the summer holiday. When you help families with children, you provide them with an unforgettable camp experience.”

  •  Hannele Liukkonen, Caritas' Social Worker

In 2022, we were able to ease the costs for participants in a total of eight different camps. The total amount of camp support was 3,650 euros. In 2023, we provided support for 26 children attending four different camps, totaling 2,000 euros. Thank you to all the donors who brought summer joy!

Hannele Liukkonen's first hand account

"I have had the opportunity to volunteer as a camp assistant at Ursuline children's camps. It has been wonderful to see how children who were previously strangers quickly get to know each other and start playing together. The children’s positive energy is delightful. From early morning to evening, the children engage in guided activities and quiet reflection during the day's Mass. In their free time, swimming seems to be the favorite activity. Meals are an important part of the daily routine, and the week's menu is healthy and varied. The food has always been delicious and plentiful."

"At camp, children can release the pressures of the school year in a safe environment as soon as the holiday begins. Being at home feels nicer after spending some time away. As one camper noted at the end of camp: ‘It's nice to go home; I realized I miss my little siblings!’"

Gift cards bring Christmas Joy

With a gift card, a low-income family can purchase Christmas food or gifts. Food and goods have become so expensive that many families cannot afford them. By early autumn, many are unsure how to manage Christmas expenses. With your support, Catholic parish priests distribute gift cards to either lonely individuals or families with children. Caritas' domestic social work support helps parishes assist low-income families.

At the end of the year, we need your support to provide gift cards to low-income families and single-person households. Caritas provides gift cards to people who have fallen outside other assistance:

  • Low-income families with children, for whom Christmas is an extra expense

  • Elderly individuals or couples living alone, for whom a small financial support brings Christmas cheer

  • Large families with low incomes, who are mostly immigrants

With the received gift card, families can buy Christmas food or gifts. Your support brings Christmas spirit to many families.
